The former boys' school recently became available in the village centre of Zomergem and is the perfect location for a new housing project. At the request of the municipal council, the intermunicipal association Veneco organised an architectural design competition for the purchase and development of this location, with respect for the authentic character of the school. Dierendonckblancke architects, Lieve Van De Ginste landscape architects and project developer Arlo nv formed the winning team. The buildings are still under construction (2019).
The old playground will be restored to its former glory, along with several large trees, and will form the heart of the development project. The residences will open up onto this playground area, creating the perfect place for children to play and residents to connect. A parking area will be created at the front of the site and a smaller, covered outdoor space will be created there as well. Two taller buildings, including the former teacher's residence, will be renovated and converted into two houses and three apartments respectively. Other school buildings will be replaced with eight new-build houses, each with their own private garden. A continuous canopy will be created on the front, creating a seamless transition between the private residences and the playground, while also serving as a nod to the original buildings.
